Glad that Sandrini and Temple are able to keep on throwing. Brice was a lot better at the discus than shotput, so I'm glad he gets to go after a good day by Budwig.

Surprised @ Pandrini. I bet she could still win it, but hopefully she can win at least three events - not four.

Leyva had the choice of Graduation or the state meet... there was a mix up this year and graduation will start an hour early (@7pm). Would have been fine if Grad was at normal time... She had a great run and is a great kid!!!

Prandini went with what she could possibly win... the 200m believe it or not she would have trouble making it to day 2 plus tired legs... personally I think it is a great call.... the 100m will be tough...

That's too bad that the State Meet can't be moved to a Sat/Sun.  Every year there are a lot of athletes that have to choose between Graduation or State Meet.  I'm sure that Leyva agonized over that decision.  But in the end Graduation was the best choice.  As far as Prandini, I'm with you on her scratching the 200m.  Her best chance at winning 2 titles are the 100m and Long Jump.  Triple Jump she will medal, although she will be pressed to win a title.  The other 2 TJ'ers are Melia Cox-Poly and Cierra Brewer-James Logan.

Also the Monteverde sister's could both be in the State Finals.  Alyssa M in the 100m, 300m, and possibly the HJ.  Aginae M has a shot for the final 9 in the Pole Vault.   She has got to clear 12ft 6in to make it.

State is a few days away, so who from the valley has a chance to win, or get top 3..

It's too soon to call.  Better to wait until the prelims tomorrow.  After we see who makes the Finals(top 9 and ties) then we'll see who has a shot at a State Title or finish in the Top 3 or Top 6 for medals.

I always say tomorrow is the better day than Finals.. I mean really, they're fresh, it's hard to PR twice, and there's lots of talent and many athletes will be pumped since it's the first day of State.

People to make it on in my book for boys:
100m - no one.
200m - Thieleke (west)
400m - no one.
800m - Lewis (ridgeview)
1600m - Buchanan kids and Villhauer.
3200m - everybody?
Long Jump - Dillon Root (if he's still jumping) Johnny Carter of course.
Triple - Johnny and Idarre.
High Jump - Idarre.
PV - Ramay of Liberty is peaking?
Shot - Temple, Darr, Irwin.
Disc - Budwig, Darr, Irwin.

Ramay could pull an upset and win it all!
What about Brice Sandri from El D in the Discus?
Dillon Root will be in the Long Jump.  Also you forgot to mention any of the girls.  I'll start with our very own:
Lisette Mendivil in the Discus.

I'm a little unsure on Sandrini. He went big during Golden West, and I remember thinking, man this guy has some talent. But really, I think that Temple has an opportunity to beat him out in the Discus, I think they were only a feet in distance, and Temple is a football star who is just learning the sport pretty much. I could see both Temple and Sandrini in the Finals and have a stacked Central Section throwing group in the State Finals.

any updates?  Someone has to be there.  :)

DYESTAT has the running events up, but I am curious about the field events.  Most have to be done by now.
Some do, Some don't, I might!

It was "If you're Bakersfield, lets do terrible." Kern County didn't have the greatest first day. Only Centennial seem to come and perform. Even Darr didn't have his best day in the field, and Collatz didn't meet her own standards.

Ramay got lucky, apparently he and some other PV'ers protested, and they are allowed back into the State Finals.

The sprints are going to be interesting.. In the 100m, a 10.55 was the fastest time going in, and a 10.57 (hahah) wasn't allowed in. I felt bad for the guy from Crenshaw who ran the 10.57 because they announced him qualifying, then said... nevermind.. you didn't make it.

We'll see today if they can hold it up.

I wouldn't say terrible for Kern County, they have:
Darr             Frontier              Shot put/Discus
Lewis           Ridgeview           800m
Carter          Ridgeview           TJ/LJ
Collatz         Stockdale            Discus/Shot put
Rasley         Shafter                Shot put

I think the biggest surprise was Cody Temple.  3 Fouls for the Shot Put-DNQ  and  10th place in the Discus-DNQ.
You have to give it to Brice Sandri, he pulled out a huge throw in the Discus to make finals.

I think that Jenna Prandini could win the Girls MVP at State if she wins at least 2 golds and a Silver in any of her events.

How can you not say a bad day..

Darr did terrible for what he's expected.. you can't say that. (His discus throw today didn't help).
Collatz threw only 160, she's hittin' 180 since the beginning of April.
Carter had to get into the Long Jump on his final jump. Just wasn't that great.

Prandini is one heck of an athlete. Still waiting on the Triple Results. Great Finals day so far.

Huge shocker on D'Anthony Thomas - last place after being seeded first or second and won state last year..

Let's put it this way.  Have you ever been there on Prelims Day trying to qualify?  There are a lot of nerves and tension riding on just 3 throws, or tosses, or jumps, or just one race.  THEY MADE FINALS, that's all that matters.  Then on Finals they can go for it all.  The last thing anyone wants to do is not qualify.  And Yes, there are a lot of Top Names that did not get to compete for Finals.

Yeah I know what you mean by that. Nerves are the number one thing. That's what happened to a team mate of ours in that 800m. She ran 3 seconds slower on her first lap; nerves just got to her and didn't run her race.

Can I ask what was up with Justin yesterday? Definitely something was up.. In both races!

He definitely has the ability to run a sub-9 two mile.. and comes out with a 9:30, and it wasn't as if he was even up in the top group with Erik Olson or anything.. he was in mid-pack the entire time..

How can you say Collatz had a bad day?  Because she didn't PR?  She threw 170+ feet tow WIN the meet!  She threw 180 early in April, ok.  It is like the 5th best throw of her life and you're saying she didn't do well?  If you know anything about the sport you would know that you don't PR every time out.  In a meet like this, the goal is to win the event and that she did...and comfortably I might add.  Track and field is a sport where athletes deal with failure far more often than they do success than any other sport.  And you can only do YOUR best.  Believe me; I had plenty of meets where I felt I threw like crap and won the event and days I threw great, even PR'd and didn't win the meet.  That is the nature of the beast that is track and field.
I drive really slow in the ultra fast lane while people behind me are going insane!  I'm an A******!

As for Darr, no, he didn't do what was expected but again, he wasn't up to par himself and if I am not mistaken, isn't he having a hernia surgery soon?  If that being the case, he probably has not lifted much at all recently and being that the discus ring is a larger ring that the shot ring and requires a larger sweep and drive across the ring, it porbably hurt a bit.  Not to mention, Irwin threw 207 plus!  That is far beyond Darr's PR himself so to expect Matt to PR like that in his condition to win the meet is insane.  He did just fine and let nobody down and has a lot to be proud of.

I'm sorry.. but do you actually know Alex like I do? I'm not an adult like you guys. I'm currently on the track, not livin' in the past. I talk to her all the time, I talked to her post-meet and before the meet. I was also referring to the Pre-Lims, where she was just over 10 feet about the Valencia thrower.. I realize that's her sixth best throw, but also during Pre-Lims if you remember, that's when she finished ahead of Jelminni for the first time all season.. She always go big during those huge meets.

It's ok Frontier.  Nobody's bashing you.  Your opinion is valued here just like anyone else's.  Plus you have what a lot of inside info that we don't have, and that's up close personal info, that old dudes like us don't have(unless of course we have a son or daughter that runs track currently...lol).  Anyways I'm glad that you followed the track post here on the track section.  Not too many crazy people like us enjoy track out there.  Keep posting.  BTW Idarre was up at CAL on Sunday for his first Athlete Freshman Orientation.  He had a great time.  Here is a pic of him:

I know what you mean. hah. I didn't take it to heart or anything. But I posted what I heard from her, so I thought that it would add into what I felt about Bakersfield not having the greatest overall day.

Grats to Idarre, friend told me he loves Astronomy? Or something in that era?

Yeah, here's really into Astrology(Origins of Stars, Planets, the Universe), and also into the origins of Mankind.  That's why he's enrolled in Physics and also Philosophy.  He really wants to know what's out there.  BTW he told me that the Coaches at CAL are going to have him still focus on Triple Jump & High Jump, but they are also going to cross train him in all the Decathlon events.  I think they may want him to eventually compete in it.

I am not trying to be a jerk at all, believe me.  I am glad you talk to her and like any track and field athlete unless you PR and sometimes even when you do PR, you still always feel like you could have done better!  That is also the nature of the beast in track and field!  If you are on the track, you know that.  And it's not about living in the past either.  That is a young immature response from someone who feels attacked and I apologize if that is how you felt because that was not my intention at all.  What I can tell you is that I am not too sure there are more on this board who know and are invovled in the track discussions and have accomplished more and failed more on the track.  Are my glory days behind me?  Sure they are, I am 33 years old but I will tell you this; up until just a few months ago, I was still beating the younger kids in one of my events even into my early 30's.  That's not living in the past, that was just fun because I could still have fun doing it; competing and yes, winning!

You also know track is a family sport so I wish you all the luck in the future.  What events do you do?

Jeraf - My bestfriend Nolan who lived with me for awhile was pretty good friends with Idarre. He used to tell me how he would get pretty into discussions. Is he still trying to walk on for football? I remember reading that in the Bee.

UBO - Yeah I know what you mean. I did 4x100 - 200 - 400 - 4x400 for the majority of the season, but then I dropped all my individual events to help get our 4x400 to State but then we had our anchor pull his hamstring at the South Area Meet, and we ran far under our PR of 3:24, 3:27 got to State, so we never got to run @ Valley.

I know he wants to try and walk on, but he is going to see how his first year goes at CAL.  It will be extremely difficult to walk on after a year of no football, but everytime I tell him it's too hard, he somehow finds a way to show me that he can.  So we'll see.
BTW did you and Nolan play against my son in the Football semis at Frontier?  And if so which position did you both play?

jeraf

Frontier

That definitely is a tough task to take. I'm sure he won't be in bad shape or anything since he'll be staying up with Track. Naw. I did not play, and Nolan got lazy and didn't play regardless of what the coaches wanted. He stuck to Wrestling and Track. Shame he couldn't finish them both out during his senior season.

Frontier-that is a tough thing to do and as someone himself who got into track to win a team title, that is pretty cool what you did but can also be difficult a pill to swallow if things don't go right on a relay.  I think it is very cool what you did because you chose the team over self for the greatest success of all.  It is not common at all in an individualized team sport like track and field to do that and I do admire that of you.  I have done it and I wouldn't have traded it for anything in the world!  Hey, I actually competed in 11 events in one tri-meet because not only did I need a little work on a lot of events but, my coach who I would have run through a brick wall for, wanted to beat one of the schools so bad that I was willing to do what I had too!  The good news was that the meet was at Santa Barbara City College and if you have never competed there, it is incredible!  Nothing like running and competeing with the ocean across the street!

Well after football/cross-country, stuff like that, we all kinda met up and we were talking about our relay and saying we could make it to State easily if we tried.. and we always said this is gonna be our team all year.. and we ended up not running that relay until .. late April? And when we did we were up there with everyone.. and our anchor didn't even try when he did run and wasn't even shape and was still running 49's. But, since he is one of the best jumpers in the Valley, he was doing that for the majority of the season, and ended up straining his hamstring the meet before, then pulled it the next meet when he wanted to run with us to get us to State.. he walked across the finish line, stopped in the middle of the race, and we still made it as an ALT to  Valley.. which is kinda sad. On pace for a 3:20. But, we have 3 returning for next year!

Any idea where Mearse is going to College?  Also will he continue in Track or Wrestling?  And you're right about 3 returners for the 4X400, that is a good thing to have.  Who are you guys looking at to fill in the empty slot?  Here are my predictions for the VC next year:

1. Buchanan
2. Centennial
3. Ridgeview
4. Central

He's got a scholarship to CSUB. He's only doing Track & Field. But, he will probably start running in college.. even though he was recruited for his Triple/Long Jump. Well, we did have a guy running with us, 300M Hurdler, Shane Thulin. Not bad, can probably run a 53.. And we also have our RB DeShaunte Webber who ran a 51 every now and then.. but not very motivated to run longer than a 200.

VC - Not sure on Centennial. Myren Moore, Adam Clayton, Matt Turkington, kinda tough to lose.. They ran a lot of their points. But Christian King will definitely help re-commence the tradition.. I think they should start having him run more than just the 4x400 and hurdles.

Yeah, but Thomas Grimes will be a Jr next year, and he can score points.  I think that their 4X100 and 4X400 teams look pretty good for next year also.  And also King will be a big help in the Hurdles events.  BTW Frontier should also benefit with a lot of 8th graders who will be incoming freshman.  Some of those kid would have gone to Liberty, but because of the new school boundaries, Frontier will get most of those kids.  If you look at the USATF stats, some of those kids will already be competing at a high level as incoming freshman.  Unfortunately 1 girl will be going to Stockdale.  Her PR marks are 5ft 2in HJ,  34ft 11in TJ, and 26.4 200m.  Believe me this girl will be at the top level in her Jr and Sr years.

I think Thomas doesn't use his capabilities that much. I mean his dad was a great runner.. but Thomas really doesn't do that many open events.. Does the 4x400, 4x100, Long Jump, 200m/400m. I think he should focus more on the 400m. He wants to be a sprinter, and do the 200m's, but he really should be a 400m runner.

Our freshman are going to be.. one of the best.. but still not going to be a straight impact you could say. The two that I am aware of our Colton Foster (throwing) who is an absolute monster in football. He got 2nd in the Valley for the Discus, and at the Middle School level you don't get that much coaching in. But, he already is bigger than Matt Darr. As for the second guy, it's our Coach's son, Gabriel Gaeta. He won both of the hurdling events this year for Valley. He was a State Champion about two years ago.. Runs a 55 open 400, he's got some good marks already. He'll be on Varsity as a Freshman for sure.

Stockdale's freshman that they got this year were amazing. It already helped them win League over Frontier, who won it last year, but a good margin. Kaire Turner made it to State in the Triple.. and she also runs a good 400m and does Long Jump. Then they have some distance girls, and there boys are going to be pretty good, too. We'll see though :)

I definitely try. I normally stick to Zach Ewing's thread.. I'm not "hip" on the out of County teams though.. Not the little teams like Madera and Kingsburg.. I like the teams from Bakersfield and Central, Buchanan, etc.
