no genius. what you are suggesting is the equivalent of taking a bucket and trying to get the water out of a sinking boat rather than plug the hole. You can't save or change the people already in the system you have to start where the cycle starts.  The community leaders currently have to encourage, teach and mentor young boys into becoming good men & fathers. I know its hard for people like you, by you I mean short sided thinker, but to fix something that has generations to get to you can't fix by tweaking the system. It will take a generation or two before you see a real difference. I believe the real change would happen at 3 generations from now.

My point is that you can't keep putting minorities in jail and then blame the problem on absentee fathers. I hope community leaders take on the problem but it's not the answer. It's PART of the answer. The system NEEDS to change as well........

this is exactly why the cycle never breaks. By mentoring the kids that are in grade school TODAY to be good citizens, to be accountable for their actions and thus keeping them out of the broken system.

If that were truly the answer then there wouldn't be a need for fathers in the home. Community leaders would take the place of fathers in the home and everything would be just fine, right?

Ball I agree with all of these, except educational opportunity. In fact I would say father absenteeism, lets not sugar coat it its the fathers that aren't present. And I understand that some of that can be attributed to the system that incarcerates minorities at a much higher rate and a longer term. But it can't all be attributed to the system. IMO the way to combat the other factors is with a strong family unit, strong role models that are both male and female.

My problem has always been blaming the system and wanting the system reformed and never addressing the lack of fathers in the homes.

If you don't change the system that "incarcerates minorities at a much higher rate" how can you then blame the problem on the lack of fathers in the home??

We probably need to identify the problem we are trying to solve.  Solving poverty and racism is like solving the gun problem.  Those ships have sailed and there are too many people with vested interests in perpetuating and exploiting those things to ever allow them to be resolved.

The more immediate problem I thought we were talking about is black criminals losing their lives during police interactions.

Organizations like BLM, and the rhetoric from race-baiters and politicians who identify as black, are not doing young black children any favors by vilifying the police, telling them they are victims, or otherwise encouraging them to resist.  If disrespect for authority is a cultural phenomenon, we can spend decades addressing the root causes but many more people will go to prison or lose their lives in the meantime.

You can commit a crime, but it is something else altogether to resist arrest, flee the police, get in physical altercations with police, fire shots at police, and seemingly try to get yourself martyred with BLM celebrity status.  Telling youngsters that the police are out to get you so do everything you can to escape, is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Sadly, these kids are raised believing there isn't much to live for.  Maybe becoming a BLM martyr, knowing that Benjamin Crump and Al Sharpton will be holding a press conference with your mother within 24 hours, beats going to prison.

Having said all that, the police might want to review their standards for shooting fleeing suspects.  There should be more K9 units.  Dogs are pretty good and running people down.

I lost a family member to state sponsored murder. He was a drug addict and bipolar. He had also spent a lot of time in jail/prison. He died from 9 gunshots to the back while unarmed and running away from police. He had never been known to carry a weapon in any of his prior incidents with police. He had a wife and children........and he was white. The officer "feared for his life" and was acquitted. This happened in Pixley less than 10 years ago. BLM and Kap are trying to bring light to the problem of state sponsored murder and it is met with "oh, it's a cultural phenomenon"..........come on, Iz........no one is looking to be a martyr. We're all just trying to survive and make it through this world. Some are in tougher situations than you or I can imagine. And I grew up in Pixley.......and still live there trying to make a difference.

Effective vetting requires more applicants than positions.  We need to make the job more attractive, not less.  Can't have it both ways.

Should we start letting kids with associate degrees teach math? Of course not! That would be ludicrous......right? Why does a teacher need a 4 year degree and another year of credential school before they're allowed to work with students? Because we make it a priority. So make policing our communities a priority! It's not that hard.......

Training needs to be increased, and possibly standardized.  Better training would eliminate situations where good cops make bad decisions, but I don't think you can train the racism out of a racist.

We also need to be clear on the difference between a good cop making a bad decision, and a bad cop making a racist decision.  We should support the former with training, and dispose of the latter without concern or second-thought.

Basically, reward good behaviour and punish bad acts.  If we don't and continue to vilify all law enforcement as bad actors who deserve our disrespect, the only guys applying to the police academy will be exactly the guys we don't want.

If the vetting process were more intense and took longer than a few months I'm guessing they could weed a few of those racists out.......IF the ones doing the evaluation aren't racist.....

Does he specify crimes as a preemptive shot to make the pardons enforceable?

If he specifies crimes that haven't been charged doesn't he open himself to charges of conspiracy to those crimes?

Big difference.  She didn't see defeat coming and have a response prepared.

Trump did.

Having a response and actually having proof are two different things......what Trump is doing is bad for our country and bad for our democracy......

Apparently, a lot of people saw past his personality and voted to support his policies.  I think both parties have some rebuilding to do after last night's results, but the Trump brand hysteria is bothersome.  It will be interesting to see what those die-hard 4-wheelers do next.

I would not suggest the Trump kids get into politics.  Better to close this chapter and reinvent themselves down the road. If they did, Ivanka might have a shot but the boys are idiots.

As for Trump's legacy, he probably really regrets badmouthing John McCain.

What stops Trump from running AGAIN in '24? Other than his age and health??

Yep ... they're called "UNIONS"!

I'm not talking about the union protecting cops when they screw up (that's what unions do). I'm talking about when your partner shoots a perp and you lie to protect your partner. THAT is much worse than street thugs "circling the wagons" so to speak.......because the police are an extension of our government and the public must be able to trust that our government isn't abusing their power. Why do you think there is so much distrust of police? Because unions do their job or because cops protect cops? The "good" cop HAS to speak up when the "bad" cop is in the wrong or else he's not really a "good" cop......am I wrong on that?

I was referring to the downward cycle of consequences.  The police are under attack and like any other organization, is circling the wagons.

Well I certainly read your previous post,

The impact of police insulating police is comparable to the insulation of black on black crime.  Both groups adhere to the snitches get stitches mentality, and in cities like Chicago, those systems feed off one another.

and did NOT pick up on the "circling the wagons" inference. I read this to mean that cops cover for bad cops just like blacks cover for each other (I'm paraphrasing your post).

Two VERY different issues. Police are an arm of the government and thus NEED to be held to a higher standard......how is the public expected to respect authority if the police don't hold THEMSELVES accountable?

They're getting them somewhere.  You said that the poor got abortions at a higher rate.  Do Mississippian's go to neighboring states?

I've read and heard stories of people traveling by bus to neighboring states.......banning abortions isn't the answer but we don't really want to do what is necessary to limit the number of abortions in our country. Access to sex ed, condoms, birth control, etc is vital. Poverty is also a huge problem that contributes to the issue as well.

I don't know which is worse, a party that downplays the pandemic, or a party that leverages it for it's own political gain.

Given the party that downplayed the pandemic did so for ECONOMIC reasons........and likely could have had us out of this mess had they taken it seriously.....yeah.......I know which one is worse......

Because they live in areas where access to education, healthcare, and role models are in short supply.....JMO.....
