Title: SWYL Pre-Season Predictions
Post by: GoldenHawksFootball on July 30, 2014, 03:00:05 PM
Here's my predictions:

1. Bakersfield
2. Liberty
3. Frontier
4. Centennial
5. Stockdale
6. Garces

This prediction is not knowing anything about the incoming juniors and lower classman. Based off of what I know is coming back from last year, systems, transfers, coaches, etc. With the loss of Croney, I move the Rams from 4th to 6th. 1st year coach, new system, new league will be tough for them. Same thing on Stockdale. Unfortunately when you get a new coach in a league as stacked as this one, it takes a couple years for a team to hit it's mark. Not a knock on the new coach. I don't see Stockdale returning much from last year with the loss of Wood and the X man. Centennial will be better than last year but how much will their QB develop from last year? We know they have Brandon Robinson and a new transfer receiver. I just don't know that's enough horses in the shed to match up with the top 3. Frontier is the unknown for me. I know they return quite a few players but lose their QB Moore and WR Jaz Thind, 2 players very tough to replace. But the addition of Isiahh Sharp catapults them into 3rd. Liberty returns quite a few players and always has a pretty solid JV team to plug in play immediately. Anthony Mariscal is a special player. Again in Nixon's spread attack, will the QB step up and prove he is a threat to spread em out? And once again I have Bakersfield 1st place. Although unlike last season they lose lots of talent. Tough to replace Asauni Rufus but the young QB will be the determining factor in a lot of games. As well as Hays, Reddick, Vickers, etc. They may struggle early in non league but I expect them to be the top dawg and rolling once league is here. Golla always has his team peaking in league for a playoff run. I like them to finish 1st simply because of the Marcus Bruce/Lameshio "stiff arm" Hill running combo attack. I think that alone is more than sufficient when no other team boasts 2 backs as good as those 2. But once again it is a mystery for all these teams at the QB position. And that being said, I don't think this is a south valley year for a valley title or state title in D1. I think it will come from the TRAC.

This should be a good year in the SWYL.

1. BHS Drillers

2-5 will be Liberty Frontier and Centennial, no clear cut fav here,

bringing up the back will be Stockdale and garces, the new coaching situations will have an effect but not as much as some may believe. The kids at garces may have a new coach but they have played football before just like the kids at Stokdale, they'll still have to tackle and block.

Don't get me wrong. I think it's going to be a tight league. I think the Drillers will be pushed more than previous years. Centennial could be 3 and Frontier could be 4. I'm basing much of my initial prediction on the legs of Sharp. Heck of a player! Curious to see what he can do week to week with tougher competition in a different system than that stupid Wasco offense where they do the same thing every other play. The new coaches will serve their teams well. They garner some non league wins. I just think that Golla, Nixon, Cornford, and Snead are all master minds with great staffs that game plan really well. They spend as much time in the film room as on the practice field. As a result their teams are well prepared. Those new coaches might be great but what kind of staff do they have around them and what kind of talent do they have to work with. I don't see the talent level at Garces and Stockdale at the level of the other 4 schools.

I agree it will be a much tighter league than in years past and if the kids that are stepping in for the Drillers believe that the other teams are just going to lay down and let them walk away with a SWYL title because they're last years champs they will be in for a rude awakening, if the Drillers usually have a target on their back this year it's even bigger.

Two years ago the Bits lost zero games ...

Last year the Roughnecks lost one game ...

Most of the best players from those teams will integrate well into the Driller team ...

The real question is will the 2014 Drillers be faster or slower than the 2013 team?

1. Drillers

Tie for 2. Liberty, Centennial, Stockdale (honorary Ridgeview)

Tie for 5. Garces, Frontier

If Ridgeview was in this league I might place them #1. That's what I think of their roster with Croney. They return everybody and add the best back in Bakersfield, if not the Valley.

Not that it has any bearing on what they will do this coming season but to get the facts straight, BHS' incoming junior class lost 4 or 5 games their freshman year.  They most definitely were not undefeated.

That being said, my predictions:

1) Liberty
2) BHS
3) Centennial
4) Frontier
5) Stockdale
6) Garces

jd34 beat me to the record correction.  I saw every Bits game two years ago.. and every roughnecks game last year.  The QB spot was the weak link on both teams.  Way too many fumbles/turnovers handing off and pitching the ball... and most every pass was incomplete, or intercepted.  The QB spot for this year's varsity team is the big question mark - only because there is no Rufus-caliber replacement.  They have a big, tall kid who didn't play last year who looks like a possible passing-type kid.  The QB from last year's Roughnecks team can run the ball.. but is not a strong passer.  There are rumors that Bruce or Hill might run some plays from under center.  The Drillers will still be a very strong and fast team... and it will be interesting to see how they work through the QB challenge.  Their defensive line is very strong... and their defensive backfield and linebackers are very fast.  And, we all know what defense wins...

I

I remember 1958 when out of the blue Paul Briggs took this big kid who was the first freshman he ever started the year before and made him the QB!!! Are you nuts! They were 8-0-1 that year ...

I think Paul Golla thinks outta the box too. His offense adapts to his players and vice-versa ...

We'll see. In any event maybe it was league games I was remembering??? Can't remember!!!  :x   :

Stand by my standings though ...  :u:

They have as good a shot as BHS, Centennial and Frontier...in August anyway.

I see it as wide open , lots of un known .Watch Passing league ( the teams that where in it ) . QB play from all schools will make a big difference on what teams does well . Running backs will carry most teams .

Maybe so particularly at the high school level, but you at least have to show you can live with balance. Not every day will cereal work for breakfast.

Garces does not belong in this league or D1. Does not recruit like a small Catholic school must too be at the level to compete with a school like BHS. No chance with these schools, none.

If they were in the Southern Section then I would agree with you. But they're in the Central Section.

Did Independence belong in the SWYL? Traditionally who's better Garces or Independence? Does Ridgeview belong in this league? Should their only be 5 schools in the SWYL? It's not about recruiting.
It's about winning in the section the school plays in. This is not a southern section issue. It's a central section one. Like CW says. They competed with BHS just fine 2 years ago. People like you don't
want to challenge yourself in any element and are poster boys for the "this isn't fair" club. What do you tell your team Goal Post? Jim Kelly is saying this isn't fair either. How does Jim Kelly live?

Goldenhawk, Has the rule forever been you only can play 2 above your enrollment?  We are D4 is size, 2 up is D2. We can't compete with the likes of BHS and the others in football 9 out of 10 years. They will admit the mistake and move the Rams back in 2 years. We can compete in D1 in many other sports and happy to do so but football, unfortunately no.
