Patriots aim to be first to beat BHS twice in season

BY ZACH EWING The Bakersfield Californian [email protected]

There are many ways Bakersfield High can measure greatness, but here's a pertinent one:

The Drillers have NEVER-- not once in 111 years of playing football -- lost to the same team twice in one season. That's according to Central Section historian Bob Barnett.

Anything's possible:  THEE BHS beat Ridgeview

                              TW beat Golden West

Glenn Really.  Stop making every post about the mediocre CSL. Only teams that are decent in that leauge is Dinuba and CVC.  All other schools are having a down year. Stop blowing smoke, take your ADD med's and stay with what the posted topic is.
Back to Madera South. Congrats and good win. We all know how hard it is to turn a program around. Great start and good luck to the coaches and players.

I haven't posted in a long time, but CAB, you're treading on the wrong person.....you better not post on here unless you apologize to Glenn for your UNCALLED remark about ADD.  Or if you aren't man enough to do that, pack your S*** and stay off this site.

100% of EVERYONE, here on this site, has Glenn's back.  I'll vouch for that, because I know I'll defend Glenn without any hesitation.

That's all I got to say about that.

Teg Agu, graduated from Frontier in 2010. Didn't receive a football scholarship and walked on the CAL Football Team.  Died tragically in 2014 (the year he was supposed to graduate).  But he had earned a scholarship in the season prior.  At the graduation ceremony CAL Posthumously awarded (to his family) Teg Agu's Degree.  In my book he graduated.  RIP Ted.

Tracknut, Joey deserves all the accolades given towards him. He's a humble, yet confident athlete, regardless of his height or weight. He's definetly my pick to claim the gold in the LJ.  I really hope that he can make the finals in the 100m also. Best of luck this Fri/Sat for all your athletes. I'll be in S.F. this Fri-Sun.  :u:

The Central Section Track & Field Athletes WILL make their presence felt at the State Meet this Fri/Sat.  :u:

Didnt start a new thread but:

My son Graduated with a 3.2 GPA from Yale on May 19, 2014.  His name is engraved on the hallowed walkway at the Yale Bowl, has his Varsity Y sweater, and 4 days after graduation, was back in San Luis Obispo playing golf with the CFO of Apple, and having meetings with the principals in an environmental startup that my son is now a part of(unbeknownst to me, he started with this start up technology company 2 months before graduation, kind of his graduation present to me)

Dont know where it will lead, and Law School is still imminent(as TY Davis, the Bullard grad from 2006 who went to Yale and talked Kerr into going to Yale, just graduated from Harvard Law School a week ago, and Kerr plans on potentially following Ty to Harvard or another prestigious law school)

Football helped him break into those hallowed halls, and even with all the injuries and politics, and out of 35 incoming frosh only 12 actually finished(with football that is)  I am so proud of the guy who left Fresno 4 years ago scared crapless.

Pics will follow.  Wife has them all still.

OCVF, It's so great to hear about (1) of your son's...ha ha.....I know you've got another at UCLA  ;) .  It's amazing how you son has managed to graduate from Yale, and just days after is golfing with the CFO of Apple....WOW!!!! It's who you know sometimes, in getting a start in the work force.  It seems that you son has his head on straight, and that's always a good thing...ha ha.  Don't forget the pics....and I'll keep following your other son at UCLA this year.

I know the pride I feel watching my two make their way through their college experience...  I can only imagine how you must feel with your son's accomplishment!!

If you are anything like me, your chest is puffed out at least 3 additional sizes!!!

Way to Go!!!!!    :u:   :u:   :u:   :u:   :u:

Soaring, glad to hear from you.  Believe me, when you're kids graduate with a degree, it will be such an awesome experience to witness, as your children become independent and go into the work force with such confidence. It was
hard to see my son (though happy tears) when they were allowed to switch their tassels to signify there graduation.  I wish both your son & daughter the best in their college endeavors.

This just may be a ONCE IN A LIFETIME FEAT, IMO..... :u:

Stockdale's Haney completes distance triple crown at section meet
Saturday, May 24 2014 10:44 PM
BY ZACH EWING Californian staff writer [email protected]

CLOVIS -- Even for Blake Haney, winning the three longest races at the Central Section Track and Field Masters Championships at Veterans Memorial Stadium sounded difficult.

Turns out he had no idea.

"It's easy to look at on paper and say you have the fastest times in all three events," said Haney, who became the first athlete in the 99-year history of the section championships to win the 800-meter, 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter races. "I knew it wouldn't be that easy, but it was definitely harder than I expected."

After getting pushed near his limit by Clovis North's Psalm Ocampo, Haney won the 1,600 in 4:13.43 in the 1,600. Then he was nearly beaten, by his own admission, in the 800, when Clovis' Connor Morello passed him with 80 meters to go.

"I thought he had me," Haney said. "I guess my competitiveness took over, and I made one more push."

He passed Morello with about 40 meters to go and beat him to the line in 1:52.86 to Morello's 1:53.05.

After all that, Haney's final race, the 3,200, seemed to be going according to plan. In the final lap, he made his customary kick and seemed ready to surge into the lead.

That's when Madera South's Eduardo Herrera clipped one of Haney's feet from behind, sending him stumbling.

"It was frustrating," Haney said, "but it happens. You've got to run through it. I'm not really happy about it, but it happens."

Haney caught himself and then -- in a "Heck, no" moment, Stockdale coach Dave Lonsginer said -- quickly caught up to the field and passed it. He won the race in 9:18.41, beating Herrera and pumping his fist at the finish.

It wasn't his best time, but meeting all three challenges in the span of three hours just might have been his best-ever performance.

"It's the greatest feat in the history of the Valley meet, period," Lonsinger said. "It's never been done. The range of talent and the training he's willing to put himself under separates him from anyone else."

Now Haney will go next Saturday to the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore., where he'll try to become the sixth high schooler in American history to run a four-minute mile.

After that, it's back here June 6-7 to Clovis, where Haney will look to become the second runner ever to win back-to-back titles in the 1,600 and 3,200.

"I'll never bet against him," Lonsinger said. "Until someone drives a stake through his heart at the finish line, I'll always believe he'll find a way."

Edison doesn't have enough depth.  No one in the field events i.e. shot put-discus-pole vault

Stockdale has the strength in the distances, but no one in the field events again

Buchanan has areas where they can score, but this year no distance runners except in the 1600m, IMO not enough good scoring depth

Kingsburg, IMO could be the darkhorse.  They have enough depth (including the field events) and talent with just (1) person Joey Souza (He could score 25-30 pts alone). Not to mention the potential of the 4X100 Relay.

It all comes down to which team has the best day and for someone (other than the favorites) not expected to win, to move up and score BIG points for their team.

Good luck Tracknut with your team.

In an upset:
1. Kingsburg
2. Buchanan
3. Edison
4. Stockdale
5. Frontier
6. Bakersfield
7. Central

Thanks to everyone that commented on this thread.  Most here on the Preps celebrate when a kid gets picked up to play a sport in college, but so many times we don't follow-up on the next 4 years.  I know there are many others that have graduated with a degree, and it would be nice to have them post it, about their sons or daughters on such an accomplishment.  BTW my son, already has a temporary job (high end personal security) while he is applying for the S.F. Police Department.  He takes his first comprehension test on May 30th.
Once again, thanks for all the kind words of congratulations.

I know that most of us here talk about our kids in sports and where they might end up going, but I'd thought that I would share this pic of me and my son Idarre J Coles (CAL Graduate Class of 2014 May 17th). My son previously graduated from Redwood High-Visalia back in 2010.  He played Football and was in Track & Field.  He was recruited by CAL for T&F and ran track as a Decathlete (earned his Track Letter) and for the past 2 years was a walk-on on the CAL Football Team. Him and Bakersfield's Frontier Titans LB (the late Ted Agu #35) walked on the team together.  My son has his Decal on his sash in remembrance of him. When my son entered college I dreamed of his running in the Olympics or playing in the NFL someday, but in reality, that never materialized....ha ha.  But instead, what I did get, was a young man who became a Man, who received & earned his BA in Legal Studies from the #1 Public University in the World, UC Berkeley. After all, this is what it's all about, in the end.  These past 4 years seemed like a blur, but I'm sure for him, there were long days of studying, countless hours of essay writing, many mid-terms, and finals. In short, when you send your young man or daughter away to college, keep them focused on the diploma, it will stay with them forever, long after their youthful bodies decline from the rigors of an athletic sport.  GO BEARS!

The Central Section football playoff brackets are going to have a distinctively new look in 2014.

The Central Section approved its divisional realignment for the 2014 and 2015 fall seasons on Wednesday, and there were several items of local interest on the football side:

• Tulare County's three 2013 Central Section division champions all earned promotions to new brackets — El Diamante (Division II to I), Dinuba (Division III to II) and Farmersville (Division VI to V).

• Tulare Union's days for being fodder for the rest of Division I are over. The Redskins are back in Division II after four years in Division I.

• Tulare County's influence in Division II increased with five teams making up the 15 schools in the bracket. Porterville is joining Tulare Union and Dinuba as new Division II teams, a group that already includes Redwood and Monache.

• A significant shuffle in Division III with Mission Oak joining 10 other new schools in the bracket.

Central Section commissioner Jim Crichlow said that the divisional realignment is final except for possible appeals. Schools have until May 21 to file an appeal.

And yes, there will be one local high-profile appeal — El Diamante is not too happy about its Division I status.

El Diamante athletic director Greg Flenory said that the school will file an appeal for football, girls volleyball, boys water polo and girls water polo. El Diamante is in Division I in all four of those sports.

"We just don't have the size to be a Division I school," Flenory said. "When you have to play schools that are at 4,000 kids, it's not fair for our kids. Our [boys] tennis team is in the Division I playoffs, and we're the No. 13 seed out of 13 teams. We just don't have the make up of a Division I school.

"We don't have the facilities or the numbers to compete at Division I. If [Visalia Unified] would allow us to grow our enrollment to 2,500, then we could possibly compete. But they want to keep us at 2,000 [students]. Look at our volleyball team. It took [head coach] Leslie Sorensen four years to build that team, and now six of those girls [from the 2012 and 2013 Division II champion teams] are gone."

Handing out invitations to the Division III playoff bracket could prove to be very problematic for the playoff seeding committee. The maximum number of teams for a football playoff bracket is 16. There are 25 teams in Division III. No other division has more than 15 teams.

Mission Oak's move to Division III football is one of three key transfers in that bracket. Bakersfield Christian, the 2013 Central Section Division IV champion and Southern California Division IV regional champion, earned a promotion as did Wasco. Remaining in Division III are Golden West, Mt. Whitney and Tulare Western.

CVC and Exeter will be joined by Lindsay in Division IV. The other new Division IV teams are 2013 Division V champion Liberty-Madera Ranchos, Mendota and Washington Union.

Farmersville and Strathmore, two of the top Division VI teams in recent seasons, were elevated to a 14-school Division V bracket, which includes Woodlake and Orosi.

The lone Tulare County team in Division VI football is Granite Hills.

Aside from El Diamante going up in Division I in girls volleyball, Redwood was promoted to Division II, and Woodlake was moved to Division III. Of the 17 schools in the Division II girls volleyball bracket, seven of them are from Tulare County (Exeter, Golden West, Monache, Mt. Whitney, Redwood, Tulare Union, Tulare Western).

The Central Section has not made its official ruling on realignment for winter sports — that will come in October — but the proposed realignment will shake up the boys basketball playoffs.

Mission Oak is slated for a promotion to Division II along with Dinuba, Independence, Fresno and Roosevelt. Tulare Union and San Joaquin Memorial will move down from Division I to Division II. The proposed boys basketball realignment also has Golden West and Tulare Western going down to Division III.

A great young man for sure. As are the other 23 players on the team. Throwing an inning or two for his team? A batter or two? That's too much to ask? Really? ....... Do you guys really believe that the great shortstops in todays MLB didn't throw some innings for their High School team? Please!

Id love to get the Pagmeters view point on this.

TC, Gatewood let his Coach prior to spring training that he wouldn't be pitching at all.  Clovis didn't lose that game based on an inning or two.  For them to even reach the Finals was an enormous feat, given the talent of the teams at that tourney.  Clovis Cougars Baseball TEAM represented their school, city and the TRAC extremely well.  As for getting Pagmeters' point of view on this......who cares!!!!!!  Maybe you and Harry Carey can put together a baseball team and show us, how it's done...... :x

Clovis Cougars Baseball TEAM has an excellent group of young men playing for them, and I'm sure they don't think that Gatewood lost the game because he didn't pitch......I'm sure those young men played THEIR HEARTS OUT, and Gatewood (to them) is just another piece of the puzzle, for their team, WIN or Lose!!!!!

No, he couldn't pitch an inning for his team to win a once in a lifetime tournament.  Has he had a real clutch hit vs. a good pitcher with the game on the line? If so , I don't recall.

HC, I believe the Clovis Cougars are a TEAM.  That means Gatewood is not the savior for the Cougars.  They win and lose as a TEAM.  I'm pretty sure, that you don't know nothing of this young man, nor could even conceive what the Coaches want to do, as far a TEAM strategy goes.  The Clovis Cougars, just placed 2nd in an Elite Field of National Baseball Teams, and that's pretty damn good in my book.  For you to call out this young man is just classless, and seems to lean at a possible hidden agenda towards him.

So according to track and field news today joey is indeed 3rd in state,  5th in the country and is the number 1 non senior!

This should put Joey on the radar for College recruiters (especially since he's still in 11th grade).
Joey is an elite LJ without a doubt.  The rankings don't lie.  :u:
