One reason I believe The sports in the 661 fell off is due to parents wanting to create super teams and transfer like crazy. A lot of teams in Bakersfield are playing against kids that live next door to them. Teams like frontier become toxic and fire coaches when they don't win. The talent pool has been plunked out of each school. So many kids are transferring before hs after freshman-sr year. There's no consistency and no accountability anymore. And then the amount of work it takes in those 4 years to get better takes a full team to workout together. Environment is another 1 for example my friends son left a hs to transfer to independence. When he left he had bad grades from his former school. Joined golla at independence he has had the best grades of his life because the environment that golla creates is really positive. Kids want to be there go to school be apart of a good program and the positive attitude they have shown him has made him a better kid in general. And he doesn't even play much.

hsfootball, I can somewhat agree that parents want to send their kids to the better program and as a byproduct it looks like a, to use an oft-used talking heads word, super team. The biggest issue as donnie pointed out last week is the awful coaching which leads to terrible teams and kids want to leave. That is as you mentioned kids want to play for programs like Golla's and Nixon when he was at Liberty.

Coach Millan

Need to also consider KHSD ability to offer before school/during school(or both) strength and conditioning for players.  If this is not consistent then lower level kids have to try to figure it out on their own until they are on varsity. Now they are in catch up mode to the TRAC kids. Not to mention "football work" getting done in the off season for 0 period.

this goes to admin being on board with and supporting the football program. Add to that having football coaches running the strong body/ athletic periods.

Frontier parents went out and tried their best to make a super team.  The transfers came from SoCal.

Teddy I went to the liberty vs independence game. My take away was a bigger stronger even faster liberty team but very bad coaching. if it was not for the big plays liberty would have lost to independence. You could tell how much more independence was better prepared and coached throughout the game. Eventually the liberty size wore down independence. I looked over at the liberty stands and it was empty. Nowhere near the support they once had 2 years ago. So yes bad coaching is ruining the programs and losing kids.

Now with all these bad programs in town you will see a shift towards independence and Bakersfield high school for the better public school football programs in town. I believe Bakersfield high for football is on the rise and kids will start going to go there again with the fall of the westside football. Independence because of golla.

Kennedy is either close to being the best team in the section or Liberty is that bad for being a power school, because Kennedy steam rolled Independence and Liberty barely skates by.

hsfootball,

Frontier is the beneficiary of the qb's family having an enormous ego and being loaded so they have the resources to try and feed that ego. I heard rumors that they went out and tried to entice kids to transfer to Frontier to aid in making the qb look good.

I figured that Liberty's size and depth would eventually ware down Independence. " You could tell how much more independence was better prepared and coached throughout the game." this was how the Drillers were when Golla was there and they played So. Cal and TRAC teams. Liberty is horribly coached. I will not be surprised if Independence starts to get much better athletes in the coming years Golla runs a solid program.

Bud I would say a little of both, Kennedy has a solid program that benefits from sharing and working with the other programs. The best O-lineman at Kennedy is also a stud wrestler. Coach Millan has built an excellent program there at Kennedy and my guess is that kids in Delano want to play there. Liberty is bad, they still have players but the coaching is terrible.

@teddykgb, few questions for you but where does liberty go from here? Do you see a coaching change happening and if so, which big name coach would even entertain going to Liberty and rebuilding what Coach Nixon once had in place?

Sn:I think Kennedy is the place where kids want to play in Delano. CCHS has not been the same since Quinn left and Delano HS has not had any stability, coaching wise, until now with Coach Gonzales. But even with that, it seems like kids are still gravitating towards Kennedy. My question now is when does it ever become a problem (if at all)for the school district when so many kids want to go to one hs over the others?

I don't believe Liberty will move just yet to replace Bolin, they will give him a couple more years unless the parents that write the big checks start to make noise. He was in a tough spot with a multitude of factors working against him: he was following one of the most successful coaches in the area and he is extremely inexperienced. Liberty is not the place to "learn" they have high expectations. As far as "big name" coaches, the best coaches in Kern County right now, in my uninformed opinion, are Golla, Perucci and Millan.

As far as kids wanting to go to one school in the district, that is nothing new...The Bakersfield High School was that school from the 80s until the around 2020. Then it was Liberty and that has now shifted to Frontier. In Delano kids are moving towards Kennedy because they see the success and kids talk, they sense when they are being coached well. On that note it is my understanding that there were grumblings at Liberty after the Buchanan and Central East games that they need a new coach.
