I know that most of us here talk about our kids in sports and where they might end up going, but I'd thought that I would share this pic of me and my son Idarre J Coles (CAL Graduate Class of 2014 May 17th). My son previously graduated from Redwood High-Visalia back in 2010.  He played Football and was in Track & Field.  He was recruited by CAL for T&F and ran track as a Decathlete (earned his Track Letter) and for the past 2 years was a walk-on on the CAL Football Team. Him and Bakersfield's Frontier Titans LB (the late Ted Agu #35) walked on the team together.  My son has his Decal on his sash in remembrance of him. When my son entered college I dreamed of his running in the Olympics or playing in the NFL someday, but in reality, that never materialized....ha ha.  But instead, what I did get, was a young man who became a Man, who received & earned his BA in Legal Studies from the #1 Public University in the World, UC Berkeley. After all, this is what it's all about, in the end.  These past 4 years seemed like a blur, but I'm sure for him, there were long days of studying, countless hours of essay writing, many mid-terms, and finals. In short, when you send your young man or daughter away to college, keep them focused on the diploma, it will stay with them forever, long after their youthful bodies decline from the rigors of an athletic sport.  GO BEARS!

Congratulations.  I remember you posting his decision to attend Cal.  Doesn't seem possible that he's already graduating.  Time flies by.

Wanted to hit QUOTE so all those wonderful pics showed up again!

Jeraf, you and I have shared countless thoughts on this matter, and I want to say that your post put tears in my eyes.  The academic portion of college is hundreds, nay, THOUSANDS of times more impressive and beneficial to a young man/woman in todays world, and you should be very proud.  I hope you know that your post above rings home VERY CLOSELY to my personal situation as well, and that my offer of congratulations and well wishes is very heartfelt.  Please tell your son Congratulations for me.  Lets chat soon.

PS, Im in Connecticut right now, as we speak.  I went through the same thing you just did, with my son, but dont have any pics downloaded for the group.   Will follow up when possible with another post.

Unbelievable that it has already been four years! My heartiest Congratulations to Idarre. Your son is a true blessing and should be very proud of his accomplishments. Those pictures are outstanding, and your picture with him is wonderful. Great job Dad - I know your support and love kept him going during the tough times.

This is AWESOME, congratulations to both he and yourself for raising a fine young man!

Thanks to everyone that commented on this thread.  Most here on the Preps celebrate when a kid gets picked up to play a sport in college, but so many times we don't follow-up on the next 4 years.  I know there are many others that have graduated with a degree, and it would be nice to have them post it, about their sons or daughters on such an accomplishment.  BTW my son, already has a temporary job (high end personal security) while he is applying for the S.F. Police Department.  He takes his first comprehension test on May 30th.
Once again, thanks for all the kind words of congratulations.

Absolutely correct.  Among the many benefits of participating in athletics, it can be a means to an end for those who are gifted enough to secure a scholarship.  Getting it done in the classroom, graduating, and entering the workforce as a well-educated and well-rounded young man is about all we fathers can hope for.

Jeraf,

That is ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!!!!    :u:   :u:   :u:   :u:   :u:

I know the pride I feel watching my two make their way through their college experience...  I can only imagine how you must feel with your son's accomplishment!!

If you are anything like me, your chest is puffed out at least 3 additional sizes!!!

Way to Go!!!!!    :u:   :u:   :u:   :u:   :u:

Didnt start a new thread but:

My son Graduated with a 3.2 GPA from Yale on May 19, 2014.  His name is engraved on the hallowed walkway at the Yale Bowl, has his Varsity Y sweater, and 4 days after graduation, was back in San Luis Obispo playing golf with the CFO of Apple, and having meetings with the principals in an environmental startup that my son is now a part of(unbeknownst to me, he started with this start up technology company 2 months before graduation, kind of his graduation present to me)

Dont know where it will lead, and Law School is still imminent(as TY Davis, the Bullard grad from 2006 who went to Yale and talked Kerr into going to Yale, just graduated from Harvard Law School a week ago, and Kerr plans on potentially following Ty to Harvard or another prestigious law school)

Football helped him break into those hallowed halls, and even with all the injuries and politics, and out of 35 incoming frosh only 12 actually finished(with football that is)  I am so proud of the guy who left Fresno 4 years ago scared crapless.

Pics will follow.  Wife has them all still.

Football helped him break into those hallowed halls,.....

THIS is the single most underestimated aspect of what High School football can do....  WAY too much focus on D1 scholarships and not enough on how to leverage the game to the STUDENT'S academic benefit rather than the school's benefit...

I know how hard this road is that Kerr has walked, and to properly navigate it ...to USE the game rather than the game using you...  is to be applauded!!

Congratulations!!
